By the time Nvidia launches the RTX 4070 on April 13, there won't be many surprises, it seems. Though leaks are relatively common for Nvidia and less so for AMD, we're getting a deluge of card photos just three days from its official reveal. For the first time, we can lay eyes on the Founders Edition (FE) GPU and a bevy of cards from Nvidia's partners. As always, the FE GPU looks like it's the smallest of them all and should fit in any case, although we need to wait and see the partner cards' measurements. At this point, all that's left to be confirmed is official pricing and specs, though we doubt it'll vary much from what's been reported previously.
Photos of the FE version come from Videocardz and a curious Twitter account that popped up from the ether to show off the GPU. It is a brand new account, so it seems like it's a member of the press willing to break the embargo for our enjoyment. Nvidia previously passed on the FE version for the RTX 4070 Ti, preferring instead to have its partners sell their versions. Not so for the RTX 4070; like before, the FE card could be the most affordable. However, although partner cards were usually $50 to $100 more expensive than Nvidia's version previously, it's being reported Nvidia wants this GPU to sell for MSRP, even from its partners.
The Founders Edition is confirmed in the photos to feature the new 12VHPWR cable, even though it doesn't need it with its 200W TDP. This will mean it'll probably come with a single 8-pin to 16-pin adapter, which is just awkward. The RTX 4070 Ti required two 8-pin cables, and the RTX 4080 needed three, so at least the 4070 will be better for cable management. Partner cards are rumored to use just a single 8-pin connector. Videocardz anticipates the GPU will be the same size as the RTX 3070, which is just 9.5" long, meaning it'll fit fine in most cases.
Partner cards will also vary in size from triple-fan configurations to dual-fan cards. Videocardz has photos of the entire lineup from Gigabyte, which includes four GPUs, all with three fans, so they are a bit long. However, GPUs from MSI, Zotac, and Palit all use dual fans with a single 8-pin power connector, making for an easy upgrade due to their size and power cable requirements.
The RTX 4070 is expected to perform on par with the RTX 3080, though it will surpass Ampere in ray tracing thanks to DLSS 3 and frame generation. It's also been reported it uses just 186W in gaming, which is almost half the wattage of the RTX 3080. Therefore, the sales pitch seems to be high-refresh 1440p gaming with ray tracing and excellent efficiency for $600, which is $100 more than the RTX 3070's launch price. It remains to be seen if it'll be popular with gamers, but we'll find out soon enough.
